comment fail2ban Error Gentoo
I think the problem is to do with the start up 'iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j fail2ban-SSH' returns iptables: No chain/target/match by that name. Although the chain does show up when I do iptables -L.

I've been using VPS.net for a few months they are very good. If anyone fancies trying them out the discount code AV408K should get you 90% discount for the first month.

If your sure its a route you wish to pursue you might want to checkout Cain & Abel its a very good program for retriving hashes ammongst other things. But be warned it could be considered a bit dodgy, I have used it previously to get system hashes.

comment When I have to administrate an existing Linux server what's the best way to check if it is secure?
+1 Nessus is very good, I'd also carryout and Nmap scan loading the results into Nessus might help it pick up on a few more vulnerabilites in some cases.

comment How secure are passwords with under 20 characters length?
I did the rainbows tables for all ASCII character LM hashes 64Gb took almost a week using 20 nodes my universities cluster. Take about 3 minutes to go through quite mental. Allows for cracking of all windows passwords <= 16 characters.

fail2ban is good to use. I've set on my latest vps my firewall to limit the number of ssh connections from a single ip within a time frame. So ufw limit ssh this means if someone tries to brute force ssh they have to slow down the attempt if not the firewall will ban them for a bit.
