comment Query page count from HP Web Jetadmin 10.2
Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction. I've added details regarding my finished solution.

comment Outlook 2010 can't connect to Exchange 2003 using RPC over HTTP
I double-checked ValidPorts and the port numbers are set up for both the internal AND external host names, so I don't think that's the solution to my problem.

comment Looking for this special RJ45 modular connector so I can terminate my own cables
I got a bag of them here and hate them with a passion. Buy me some single-piece plugs and I'll trade you.

comment Prioritization of requests in a small IT department
This is roughly how we're operating right now, but we've never explicitly stated as such so it feels like we're flying by the seat of our pants every day.

comment Actions to take during/after a power outage
I added a paragraph to my question explaining our environment. We don't have much in the way of development systems. "Last possible minute" is, to the best of my knowledge, handled by Powerchute Business Edition. I've broached the subject of a generator before, but the cost is too high for the handful of outages per year.

comment Slow opening of Excel files on the network
I'm not sure how much time was spent figuring it out, because it wasn't me personally, but I definitely spent far too much time listening to users complaining about it. :)

comment Slow opening of Excel files on the network
I was just going to post about this, but I see you beat me to it. We've been having the same issue here and last night determined it was KB2501584. It seems to be only applying to Excel files; I'm able to open Word and PowerPoint no problem. I can also confirm that Office 2010 is not affected.

The following seems to give a decent quick overview: siemon.com/us/standards/09-06-10-update-568-c.asp

comment Automating the rename of a SQL Server
Almost, but @var1 should be dropped and @var2 added. @@ServerName returns the name of the SQL Server instance, while SERVERPROPERTY('MachineName') returns the name of the computer.

That made it work. :)

comment Hyper-V Processor Limitations
Our old database is running maxed out on 4 logical cores (two dual-core CPUs), so we're expecting to need more than that.

Indeed, most database traffic is OLTP stuff from our ERP system. We also have a workflow system from the same vendor. Custom stuff written in-house is a small percentage.

No, the folders and files were created exactly where they reside.

We don't use the implicit groups, so that's not it. The files are not inheriting any rights; everything is being done directly on the files themselves.

I should have mentioned, I did check that right away. According to Effective Permissions, the user should not have rights to view the files. I checked group memberships anyway but found no explanation there.

comment Measuring SQL Server performance improvement
We are indeed doing OLTP. There are essentially three databases: our ERP system, our web-based workflow system, and a third database where our custom solutions do their business (zip locator for our web site, cached data for business intelligence, etc.).

The new drives are 10k RPM SAS, 2 in a RAID-1 configuration for the operating system and 3 in a RAID-5 configuration for the data. I don't have the specs on the old drives.

For the benefit of the community, I'd prefer if you could explain on here what I should be checking.

Installed all the DST updates, but emails are still timestamped one hour later than the correct time.

I checked Automatic Updates and there's definitely a DST update of some sort in there, among other things. I'll have to apply these updates after hours and see how it goes.
