comment unable to connect to ubuntu on port 3306 (mysql) on rackspace instance
@wurtel - yup. That's why I was looking at the iptables config. I consider myself to very much be a newbie when it comes to iptables hence this post. And like I said in my OP, as well, I do wonder if there might be an additional firewall that lives outside of the virtual machine. AWS has them so maybe Rackspace does too but my Google searches and searches of their web interface haven't been very fruitful in that regard.

comment unable to connect to ubuntu on port 3306 (mysql) on rackspace instance
Yes, the MySQL server is running. I'm able to connect to when I'm SSH'd into that machine. eg. mysql -uuser -p. And sure, there could be an issue with the user permissions but I can't even connect to port 3306. I can do telnet servername.com 22, telnet servername.com 80 and telnet servername.com 443 just fine. But telnet servername.com 3306 times out. And I'm not running a telnet server on those ports - it's just an easy way to see if a port is at least open and port 3306 isn't.

comment openssl cms not finding signer certificate
You are incorrect. The certificate starts at offset 64 and has an length of 487+4 per asn1parse's output, as shown in pastebin.com/AgkVbQjS. The issuer DN of the cert (and subject DN for that matter since it's self-signed) that is included in the PKCS7 message matches the issuer DN in the SignerInfo. I explained all of this in my OP. SignerInfo does not include the certificate per the CMS / PKCS7 RFC. Do you want me to add the actual ASN.1 definition of CMS to my post? That said, serverfault.com is not a good venue for this question and I disagree with the questions migration.

comment Wordpress SFTP auto update issues
You'd probably have more success with wordpress.org/plugins/ssh-sftp-updater-support . Unlike the built-in SFTP update method this one doesn't require the key live on the file system and all the problems that come with that.

comment unable to install php5-mcrypt
@user2196728 - it says that line is malformed. I tried deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu test universe but am still getting the same error.
