comment how to open port 80 on box managed with Puppet
I would probably edit add_tcp_statefull_listen.pp and add: iptables::add_tcp_stateful_listen { 'open_ports': client_nets => "0.0.0.0/0", dports => ["80"], }. I dont have a puppet installed to try it but that should do the trick.

well, for searching lots of configuration, use something like grep -ri iptables /etc/puppet/ :)

"service already defined" means that iptables service is defined somewhere else in the configuration. I suggest to try to find it in the existing puppet conf files and then edit it there. :)

comment Cannot connect to Server 2012 on port 8080
You are debugging a problem which can lay on the network between your clients and server. First of all, localize on which machine your problem is - described behavior can be made by some firewall on the network or local/remote machine, misconfigured ip the server app listens on (like localhost only) and so on.

comment How to verify if a mysql import completed successfully
I would suggest reimport. Also, diff probably won't work if the dump is large. md5sum is better for comparison for identity, but that needs exactly same dump settings.

Check the log files and post their output. Logs should be in /var/log/mysql or similar location.

comment If my DNS is a VM with HA do I need a secondary?
ad patching: In larger environments it is worthy to have some separate testing machines. First patch them, then wait at least few days if anything bad shows up. If it doesn't, it is relatively safe to patch production servers.

You can employ the tcpping/nmap/tcptraceroute and many more.

comment What tool/application (free or not) should I use to generate and write lots (TBs) of data, fast
It is slower. Zero is just a stream of 0x00 but the urandom is random data generator. The generation of data cost some computing power. IMHO the bottleneck here is probably disk I/O and not the data source.

comment Apache reverse proxy converts links in page to https
This is not the proxy issue then. Proxy processes only headers, the page itself is sent untouched. You will probably need to process whole page content with some module and ``manually'' rewrite the addresses.

comment No such file or directory
Could you run the ls -l command on the folder where your php files are? (feel free to change their names if it is an issue, i'm curious about the privileges. The solution Sandor provided you is generally considered dangerous. You just allowed everybody to read and execute anything in those folders. If you happen to use htpasswd for some basic authentication (and you located it here), or if your source code contains e.g. db connection password, you just exposed it open for every user on the system. :)

you have written the relative path, you probably meant chown -R apache /home/ec2-user/vendor also, have you confirmed the apache really runs under apache user?

If it is not a security risk, you could just add the read privilege for the apache user (or for all), but generally i don't recommend that. If you can, issue the chown command (either as a root or the owner of files) and change the ownership of files to the apache user.

comment Why does VM Guest Memory Utilisation Differs Memory utilisation report in vCenter Server
It could be that guest os (Win) reports the virtual memory and vCenter reports actually used memory. I recollect there is some kind of issue with virtual memory on Win7 so it could happen on W08R2 ( tomshardware.co.uk/forum/263765-30-hardware-reserved-memory ). Do your guest and hypervisor report the same amount of memory?
