comment What are the performance implications of running VMs on a ZFS host?
@StefanLasiewski I thought of something as hibernation for Memory snapshot that the VM will be consistent. But of course a small script for the application on the VM would be enough, to stop the service or flush the database. BUT(!) ZFS will have NO idea of the files beeing written iside the LUNF with any file system. It will complete ITS OWN write action and take a snapshot. If the VM haven't flushed their FS cache some operations will remain unwritten to the physical disk and maybe result in an inconsistent file inside the VM. For this reason i mentioned dedicatet Datastores for appfiles

comment Recommended way to setup a secure ESXi environment with a publicly accessible range and 2 NICs
A Console Connection (if the ESXi is running) can be achieved using something like this KVM Console. Just connect it to the on-board VGA and USB Ports an user a Network connection which is not public available. Of course depending on whether or not you have access to the Hardware. You could also use the public Network connection but, i have no experience or knowledge of security problems with such devices exposed to the Internet.

@syneticon-dj I agree with that, but I would still recommend using a dedicated, yet small, router, if the given environment will enable such a Setup. Witch In dis case doesn't seem to be the case :)

@syneticon-dj a TLS Connection will only protect you from listeners of your traffic, but not from potential security exploits. I keep shutting down all unnecessary ports from the wild a I don't want to be penetrate on some ports, withe proprietary protocols, with security wholes or something else. But i have to agree that i also would never virtualise a Router/Firewall as it will be your main line to all your other systems, and therefor needs some kind of reliability. (ESX crashes, ect.). So if its posible consider a router in front of your ESX setup.

comment SSH-Connection through gateway nc not working
I have never used this kind of setup. but i assume you got something wrong with your authentication (according to the last two lines of your link) -> As long as you have your public key installed on the proxy and the host that you are connecting to, and your key is loaded into pageant, This will work. Please note that it is necessary to have publickey authentication with the proxyhost using this method. It is possible to send the password over to the proxy, but I don’t recommend that at all. Are you able to log in to your proxy machine without any password? Is pageant working?
