comment CouchDB plugin for Wireshark?
+1. What I do is go into the Wireshark config in the http protocol, and add 5984 in the list of ports. Then Wireshark will provide further parsing, showing HTTP verbs, responses, etc.

If this answer is incorrect (I am nervous because you say local connections are also down), then would you mind updating your question indicating whether or not the logs show any information at all. The logs may have errors or not, but either way, that is a clue.

comment File store: CouchDB vs SQL Server + file system
Great questions and answers. I would suggest that, the benefit of CouchDB attachments is direct download to the browser. If you can't/won't let users download attachments directly off the CouchDB database, then CouchDB is just another database, not much better or worse than the others.

Are you on EC2? I have seen similar bugs on EC2 with CouchDB and I have heard others mention it too.
