Thanks for all the upvotes guys. It's bummed me out for years to see programmers at a helpless standstill once the underlying networking fails. And these days, almost all programming is network programming.

comment Microsoft Office updates fail to install
+1. This seems like a reasonable sysadmin question. If I may make a suggestion: Consider rewording the subject to be in a more focused format, such as how to re-enable Office updates which are not applying. Also, consider giving more details about what it means when "installation fails."

+1. This seems like a perfectly reasonable sysadmin question.

comment How do I migrate, dump, or restore a VirtualBox system?
+1 that's a good point and a simple big-picture solution. Unfortunately in my case I want to do things like send an image to a colleague. Frankly, I'm totally amazed that this works even over SSH. That's worth knowing.

I would add that if malware scanners are already hip to the XOR 0xFF trick then you could just use symmetric encryption with a hard-coded key. That should still be pretty simple with most scripting environments' standard libraries, .NET, Java, or whatever.

My solution is usually WinSCP, which has an explorer-like interface (and looks very CuteFTP-like which is familiar to lots of corporate users). But since that's not an email solution I'll refrain. I would add though that Dropbox is possibly superior to SCP/WinSCP because (1) I believe it uses HTTP so it penetrates more firewalls and (2) you don't need to set up a SSH host.

comment Is there a Linux equivalent of CPU-z?
Yes, I am unsure whether to post it here or on Stack Overflow. Maybe I'll start here.
