Is there a reason you are wanting to use a traditional SQL installation versus using the Azure SQL Database?

comment Network identified as public when multiple network adapters present
I would go the other way and tend to minimize or even take down the firewall on the SAN side. A good SAN network is totally isolated, not routed, and should reasonably be considered far more trustworthy than the domain side a client can hit. And when it comes to high throughput with low latency requirements, if you can reduce packet processing by getting the software firewall out of the way, that's a very good thing.

comment How to Detect Split Horizon DNS from a Single Device
Yeah, that could work assuming the targets allow ping. If they have firewalls you might assume traffic is getting blocked by the access point when it's actually getting blocked by the device. Either way, probably nothing foolproof.

Interesting. Which part of the config did you remove?

What I'm thinking is that doesn't mean it is configured to be down, but rather that your session isn't actually getting established. What does the Azure side report?

comment Change the Windows Automatic Updates Schedule on Server Core
Glad that did the trick. I agree that staggering reboots is a good idea. For this I've just turned off automatic restart by Windows Update and scripted a scheduled restart with appropriate delays between servers. Many ways to skin the cat.

Shouldn't the Virtual-Access2 interface have UP status? Otherwise the rule permitting traffic between the two 192.168 subnets wouldn't seem to be in effect.
