comment How to tar folders with specific letter
+1 for rsync, since if the connection fails, it will resume the transfer and copy only remaining files; if you don't have access to setup a rsync daemon at the other end, just use rsync over ssh

I guess not, each frame is tagged with vlan id...

comment switch or other device?
it does, since it will (eventually) leave the switch via the trunk port and needs to be correctly recognized at arrival ...

comment novell netware benefits
I'd rather use a samba solution instead of microsoft's AD ... either way, I will definitely discontinue using novell; it's only feature which I liked was the auth method - a standalone program, not win user auth

unfortunately, your first advice (and my first choice :)) is ruled out by the fact that the hardware is quite old (almost 10 years) and the danger of a physical failure is increasing every day; I don't like to work with things I don't know, but also learning an ancient app doesn't tempt me too

~30 workstations; as for data, I guess it only is a fileserver which mounts shares depending on group membership; there is a dos app (or foxpro, maybe) which is run from one of those shares

comment Bash script to backup new or modified files inside a directory
that's why some people use tools which come with the distro, and others use third-party apps/scripts/etc - the patience to read manpages :)

comment Connecting to virtual machine on host computer
the most usual setting is NAT - therefore the address will be the same for only one vm; this is the prerequisite I built my answer from - a NAT-ed interface

+1 - same method here (mysqldump) - though I keep a one-week rollback and a monthly one, just to be sure :)

the bottom line is they can interrupt the service whenever they want, for whatever reason; try tunnelbroker for a while and see if it fits ok for your needs

comment Choice for a PDC - Samba vs MS server
mail will never be transferred to eXchange - domain is to be used only for authenticating user at their workstations and nothing more than this
