comment How can you test an external (USB) hard drive?
It may also be possible to run SpinRite on it in the enclosure, if the right drivers can be found for the copy of FreeDOS that hosts the SpinRite executable. GRC claims this is possible, but I haven't done it myself.

comment Biggest command-line mistake?
Nobody but the OP and the staff moderators can edit the question yet, since the highest rep user is still more than a day's worth of rep below 2000. After that, the edit by several distinct users will apply. But the 30 answers rule should still apply....

comment How do you find what process is holding a file open in Windows?
+1 for a builtin command, although I personally use ProcessExplorer for this most of the time.

comment Crashed Hard Drive Data Retrieval
I've personally had good results with Zero Assumption Recovery www.z-a-recover.com when dealing with damaged CF cards. Like PhotoRec, they look for meaningful data rather than depending entirely on filesystem structures. They can't do nearly as much with file types they don't already know about, however.

comment What's the best method for transfering files and settings to a new computer?
One area where it (FAST) needs improvement is handling multiple users on the computer(s). When I've tried to use it in the past, it has handled that case poorly.

comment How do I destroy a hard disk?
There's a very pretty video of that being done on YouTube. It didn't render the drive unrecognizable, but it sure made it unusable.
