comment non-www domains prevent hosting of static content on the same domain, correct?
I don't really see the cost of another domain as the biggest issue, more like the maintenance & monitoring of another domain. Certainly it's not a major difference, but it's one I'm trying to quantify.

Fair enough, that sounds about right.

That is true. I guess what I meant was: If you use example.com as your canonical url, and you use cookies, then the cookie will be set to use example.com as it's base. Which I will rephrase. Certainly this isn't a problem for sites that don't use cookies at all, and won't ever use cookies in the future.

comment How can I set up mysql logs so that syntax errors are logged?
Right, I should have been more clear that I already checked that log out, I was hoping that there was a way to view queries with improper syntax and ignore queries that have the proper syntax. Because viewing everything in the log is so spammy that it's useless.

Hmmmm, made me rethink where I keep my setup documentation.

comment Blocking apache access via user agent string
Yeah, that would block bad user agent strings, but I'm looking to take it a step further and auto-ban ips associated with the bad user agent strings, such that use of the user-agent string gets you banned from that point onwards on that ip. I'd use fail2ban but I haven't found a way to nicely apply that to http requests at this point.

Uh, why would a different host be desirable?

comment Php: How to enable blowfish hashing on a debian server
Turns out, as you mentioned, that the suhosin php-hardening patch adds native support for blowfish crypt. Since that sidesteps the need to upgrade to php5.3 (which is not yet supported by zend optimizer) I plan to persue that first.

comment How should I set up protection for the database against sql injection when all the php scripts are flawed?
Err, prioritizing tiers of both scripts and tables, that is.

comment How should I set up protection for the database against sql injection when all the php scripts are flawed?
Certainly I plan to secure the scripts, and without modifying any of them, I wouldn't be any better off (apart from a little security through minimal obscurity) than I am now. But it's a huge problem to tackle overall, and I need to get it secure fast, so prioritizing tiers is the only way that I can see to get it secure -enough- to move forward.

After the initial learning curve of setup, keys will probably turn your connection process into a one-command/one-click process, they're the way to go!

His business model is simply having them pay for what they use. Sounds fair to me, as long as the usage price is fair.

That combined with a delete of the user via mysqladmin allowed me to get it into a better state.

comment Enable blowfish-based hash support for crypt
Looks like there's a native implementation of blowfish in crypt() in php 5.3 and up, which is convenient.
