comment Disable NSS LDAP IPv6 (AAAA) lookups
Out of curiosity, why the belated downvote?

comment Disable NSS LDAP IPv6 (AAAA) lookups
Thanks. It's not address selection per se that I was interested in, but instead the suppression of AAAA lookups.

comment Alternative to Daemontools (djbtools) to supervise unix processes?
+1 It's worth mentioning that the runsv command from runit supports custom controls, so that a restart could be implemented in terms of a daemon's native control binaries.

comment Overriding RPM public key database
@sciurus, for separation of concerns. It's a bit safer, since "verifier1" cannot do the work of verifier2, it's a bit easier to understand, since "verifier1" has only one set of keys, and, depending on the implementation, it's more portable, since I'd just need to migrate one user and its associated keys.

comment Java default JRE parameters on Unix
+1 Recommend double-quoting $@ to preserve arguments in the face of whitespace. (Sorry, I'd have edited that in myself, but I have repeatedly, comically, and miserably failed the CAPTCHA.)

comment How to translate error number to 'errno' constant?
For what it's worth, $! also stringifies to its strerror() representation, so this works as well: perl -E 'say $!=shift' 13

Great question. Wrong forum.

comment How to compact large directories
I think those are rather soft requirements, as the GNU docs for dirent caution that seekdir/telldir may not be reliable. The point about e2fsck is well taken. +1

comment rpm-based system configuration management
Okay, IIUC that reduces my "custom config" RPM approach to a single package, one which will bootstrap the whatever config-mgmt agent I'm going to deploy.

comment pcap stream rotation and pruning
Thanks, Bill. For posterity, can you be more specific, say, assuming an input of "tcpdump ... -w -" ? At first blush, grok (the utility) is a web interface, and its cousin bag has an incomplete man page that leaves me guessing how this might address my needs.

comment Automatically setting proxy and default printer upon OpenVPN connect
Thanks, Ryan. I didn't mean push out a DHCP option, I meant, can I configure the client stack to recognize that it's plugged back in to a familiar network and apply arbitrary settings peculiar to that networks. In any case, however, you've got the bounty!

comment Automatically setting proxy and default printer upon OpenVPN connect
Is there a way to do this that's triggered by "normal" DHCP mechanisms, rather than specifically by OpenVPN scripts?

Thanks, Eric. May I ask you, for the win, to edit and reprise the portion you think is relevant here? That'll help SFault become a choice destination for search engines, and will protect against "Kung Fu" outages or linkrot.
