comment Hidden Features of Solaris/OpenSolaris
nice read! I'll look into it, but at first sight, it does not offer all the functionality of SMF (eg. retries)

comment Hyperic HQ- Monitor process statistics for 50+ processes on Linux machine
Yes, I've read the edit. Since I haven't got an HQ running here to test it on, I can only point you to advice I followed to make such a thing work. Besides: I don't want to spoil the fun for you :) Relating to your actual technical problem: you may want to try: <plugin type="autoinventory" class="org.hyperic.hq.product.DaemonDetector"/>

comment Should you force your developers to run through a proxy?
LEAT, in theory that is right. However, the thing is that there is no way at all that you can easily make the distinction between a "legitimate" https request and one carrying an SSH session inside it (which in turn may do port forwarding etc.). Many people I know use this to bypass wrongly configured proxies (to name one kind of legitimate use). The whole point is that circumvention is easy, so you shouldn't rely on that alone to protect your network from malware etc.

comment receiving mail during Exchange maintenance?
Evan, that is quite true indeed. It is the eternal question of do-it-yourself versus outsource, and cost is one of the factors that play a role there (there are others though...). That being said, I'll go check out their offering for my own mail server :)

Actually, you have a few options for running it on windows as well. See the post of skitzot for one
