comment Linux desktop as a MySQL server?
At least in earlier versions in Ubuntu one more difference was kernel, that was more optimized towards servers and had a longer support for lts releases. Not sure, if thats true now. And of course it was possible to install server kernel to desktop, but there might be other subtle details, that are more optimized towards server work.

Why do you need that dhcp address at all?

comment ssh on eth0, everything else on eth1
Do you understand that there can be only one default route for a server? And serving IPs from same subnet over 2 cards is really complicated and most of the time not worth the trouble?

comment How to minimize bandwidth in frequent postgres backup scenario?
With snapshot that would be more efficient, but snapshot slows down database and non binary backup is considered safer. If you dump and do rsync, that most probably will not be efficient, because dump will change modification time of files and rsync will have to check all files between local and remote hosts. So it is better to do diffs locally instead of using remote copy.

comment How to minimize bandwidth in frequent postgres backup scenario?
On mysql, a good way is to do consistent backup, and later copy just binary logs - then you can do a point in time recovery by replaying a binary log on backup, but it may take longer to recover and I do not know how to do that on postgres :)

comment Nginx ssl proxy for Apache
Check with some developer tools, what urls are loaded. There might be some images requested from css or some js loading some http url, that you did not accounted for.

Then choose the one language, that you know best. Anyway your backend (database) will be biggest contention point, when scaling, not your programming language;)

Probably not. Only case, that you will want that some day nginx could use all of your cpu resources.

df -i - will show number of inodes (file and folder metadata structures) used.

You can increase sysctl parameter vm.vfs_cache_pressure over 100 to increase slab cache recovery, but that may introduce a big performance hit.
