@ETL Yes, the second PSU in not yet installed. So you mean the only problem is related to insufficient backup power. What would be the correct way to evaluate the required backup power for 460W PSU ? Is 600W/ 1000VA UPS not sufficient for the purpose ?

Not yet! This question does not arise from a full fledged lab but initial requirement analysis for backup power. I am trying to evaluate the option of giving individual backup to each group of 4 1U servers.

@ETL Do you mean the PSU installed on the server ? Is it possible to reconfigure them or they come with this preset power saving configuration ?

I am running Ubuntu on this server but I do not get the point about OS capable of detecting when server is running on battery power. There is no direct feedback from UPS to the server. Then how would the OS know about it ?

@Henk Way too expensive! I did look into it earlier but including all sort of possible expenditures related to generators I think it can be used only when one expects good amount of revenues.

@Guntis Yes, if I put the running server on backup then UPS shows pretty good 70 mins of backup!!! problem occurs only while starting the server

The application is to train unskilled people in rural areas on some of the common graphics editing applications (maybe other applications too in future) that may improve their job prospects. Right now my thought is to host thin clients on which the trainees can practice their lessons. I would be happy if I can keep the rack running for 30-45 mins during the lesson each day. Networking between the servers and thin clients is required but not as internet if you mean so. Those purpose built computers are new to me but I think they cost $200+ or maybe more!

@xeon Thanks for replying but I think this solution is more applicable when the UPS itself is not starting. In my case the UPS could not take up the load required to start the server. UPS did not face any starting problem.

@ewwhite I am trying to construct a small 4 1U server rack that can be powered in remote area completely on backup power inside a vehicle. So I started testing with UPS I have here at home (listed above). How can I calculate the initial power required by the servers ?

I started initially with branded servers like D30 from Lenovo, T420 & T620 from Dell and z820 from HP but the common problem is cost! All the manufacturers quoted me at least 2 to 3 times more than what I need to spend for this assembled system. Moreover, they are giving least choice in selecting the component manufacturers, minimal support and standard 3 year warranty on every component while here I get 5 years on RAM, HDD and 3 on rest of it; even compatibility is assured by manufacturers. So, I am evaluating if I can go ahead with a assembled machine. Thus, questions on PSU & Case.
