comment Preventing brute force attacks against ssh?
@Roy I am talking about firewalls other than the ones I own. For example if I want to ssh into my home machine from Starbucks, their firewall blocks the outgoing port. I cannot change that. (I just used Starbucks as an example. I have no idea what ports they actually block or not).

comment How can I prevent denyhosts from adding the same host to the denied file over and over
Eventually I just started using pf (packet filter), and stopped using denyhosts.

@David: Matter of taste really. If you don't mind the extra work (and the small cost), it keeps everything professional, neat, and tidy as you say. :)

Do you by chance have notes of everything you did? And would you be willing to post them? :)

I currently have denyhosts configured to write all denied hosts to /etc/hosts.deniedssh, and my /etc/hosts.allow uses that file in a rule to deny access to all hosts in that file. Denyhosts for whatever reason keeps adding the same for hosts to hosts.deniedssh

Well denyhosts is adding them to a list for tcpwrappers, would should block them. The question is why does it keep adding them to that list over and over?

I wouldn't mind changing the port all that much, but I have learned that most firewalls (other than my own) tend to lock down all ports other than the common ones (80,22, 443, etc). If I am behind those firewalls I cannot get to my home server on that nonstandard port. For me that is a no go.
