comment Set up a temporary reliable database server on a budget of $0.00
Thanks. :) Another cloud provider in the works (linux based cloud, so you can have e.g. MySql hosted there) is Serverloft. They currently have a beta program where you get a decent chunk of initial usage for free: serverloft.com/cloud

...if you got a 'near offensive' support reply that may have to do with the fact that they're a German company. :) No offense intended to Germans, but all northern europeans (us Swedes included) can come across as rude to many other nationalities... ...not sure why, but I guess it has to do with cultural/language differences or something...

Hmm. In what way was signing up painful? The only odd thing I noticed was that they had to call me back on a land line to verify my phone number. Other than that it went really smooth; my server was up and running earlier than what they originally told me. I love the IPMP web interface thing; I have set up both that one and the offsite monitoring thing (in their control panel) to send email notifications to my mobile phone if anything should go wrong with the server (or any component within it).

I changed the realtek driver from the auto-installed r8169 to r8168. This improved performance a bit, but it is still nowhere near the performance I would expect. Write performance is a lot better (90mbps over wired-to-wired) but when opening a file for reading there is still a several seconds long delay...

Thanks. PSCP also tops out at 1.5 Mbps so I think you're right re the network card driver.
