This depends on your setup really. If CloudFlare has n source (A/AAAA) addresses to pull from, you get load balancing in that manner from their side as well. Most don't fall under this many-external-addresses category, but it's definitely a valid setup, even more so as IPv6 setups make external addressing plentiful.

Is the SSL endpoint externally accessible? If so run against SSL Labs (free) and see if there's a client/cipher suite combination you're really not expecting, here's an example: ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=stackoverflow.com

@PeteT - it varies/depends a bit, remember that one particular log is sequential yes, but on a server hosting many databases (like Stack Exchange hosting many sites at a database per) the actual behavior is much closer to random access/writes than sequential, so it depends on what/how much you're running.
