comment Securing PHP on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?
Why can't you use Apache 2.4?

comment Why does tomcat like deleting my context.xml file?
Ah. Thanks. That makes a twisted kind of sense. I would call this feature mis-designed or at the very least, a hidden side-effect.

comment How to stop people from using my domain to send spam?
I have this problem at the moment, too, and my SPF records are correct. Unfortunately, a lot of big mail providers ignore SPF records. Including such luminaries as Yahoo. :-(

comment MySQL Query Browser mysteriously can't connect
Interesting. Without another solution, we coded our own SQL module in the Admin code so people don't have to wrestle with the Query Browser.

comment OS X clients ignoring Windows print server permissions
Are the unpermissioned print jobs actually printing? If they're not, then I'd say your permissions are working.

No, it won't work. A MySQL server can only replicate from one master. Your proposal requires one server replicating from two masters.

comment Is it normal to get hundreds of break-in attempts per day?
A variant of this tactic which is more effective, but much riskier, is to report the ISP to the intermediate node. But you MUST have your report evidence solid. I got a whole ISP in grave trouble once doing this, because they were ignoring their abuse reports.

comment Upgrade from Debian Lenny to Squeeze with apt-get
@Stew, that's good to know. If only more people could be told about it, as otherwise aptitude may die a slow death.

comment How to host files from public_html while still preserving security of ~/.ssh/
Umm, a+... means "all..", not "anonymous...". Apache really only needs o+x (other execute) on your home directory.

comment Why does tomcat like deleting my context.xml file?
Unfortunately, that makes development harder as I would have to restart Tomcat after each build.

comment mysql settings - using the available resources
Did you install the 64-bit version of MySQL? The 32-bit one can't use more than just under 2Gb of memory.

comment Should I install Linux applications in /var or /opt?
Qmail installs in /var. This is one of the numerous criticisms against it.

comment How do I ask screen to behave like a standard bash shell?
You need to dig into what turns the tab-completion on. The default shell configuration scripts are not entirely consistent about what they enable based on $TERM; some things will enable with xterm as well as xterm-color, others only look for xterm. Other things have other switches.

comment Servers harrassed by individual on constantly changing IPs
The only time I've seen abuse contacts work is when an ISP has put rubbish in their IANA records, which I found because they were spamming. I got a very swift result from their international link when I emailed them about that!

@xkcd150, they're pretty similar, but the biggest win is the status line. It shows all your windows plus a heap of stuff about the machine.

comment Invest into SAS drives on a pure mysql box, with a small dataset?
You haven't indicated the expected load on the DB in numbers of simultaneous connections. (And you may have trouble using all that RAM unless you run MySQL 64-bit.)

comment Who decided the default shell prompts in Linux?
The realization that this is prevalent in RedHat also makes sense: they really don't like updating things like this for fear of "upsetting what people are used to". I kid you not: I received that response from a feature request some years ago. I no longer install RedHat if I can avoid it.
