comment Who decided the default shell prompts in Linux?
I know that for my own boxes, but I can't change that on the numerous boxes I have accounts on that I don't look after. :-)

comment Who decided the default shell prompts in Linux?
It's the default in RedHat and derived, which is the standard one used by a lot of corporations. RedHat is also the default for most hosting services.

In Ubuntu, apt-get install php-suhosin will get you that.

comment Problems with running a PHP file to include directories via Linux?
I agree, this should be avoided. Unfortunately, it's sometimes necessary when using an include tree that makes assumptions about file locations.

comment MySQL Query Browser mysteriously can't connect
That's depressing. It sounds like a re-install of XP is the only solution. I don't think I can arrange that. :-(

comment MySQL Query Browser mysteriously can't connect
You didn't read the question. There is nothing wrong with the server it is functioning entirely correctly for all other users which I clearly said. The problem lies solely with the Query Browser on one PC. All your suggestions are for fixing the server.

My brother did the same thing when he was 3 at a communications link site my father used to work at. Half the link network went down when he toggled the main power switch that was conveniently 18 inches off the floor. Fortunately, the network was fully duplicated, so no traffic was lost, but still...

comment Block mails with local from-addresses from unauthenticated senders using courier-esmtpd
I've finally realized I've not used that bofh option to do that. I'd try tinkering with the options in the estmpd-msa file, specifically BOFHCHECKDNS. Also, look at how stmpaccess is setup for each of them, as the local relay rules can do some of that filtering, too.

comment 5v AC Adapter with multiple outputs?
So long as the voltage is right, it will be fine. The problem with using a PC power supply is that you have to tell it to turn on. :-)

comment How to convince a big boss that he does not need administrator privileges?
We had a problem with, not the CEO, but the HR manager. WTF? I don't recall the solution, but I think it involved presenting to the CEO what it was costing the company each time she borked her laptop. She got Admin rights removed after that.

This is really good advice for a small company making the awkward transition into a medium-sized company.

comment apache rewrite to assign folders to domains
This isn't a job for rewrite rules. It's a job for virtual hosts. (In fact, rewrite rules shouldn't be the first thing you think of when configuring Apache, anyway.)

If you are a big enough MS customer, you can make them interested in fixing SharePoint. (Yes, it does happen.)

The wait_timeout setting can be lowered, too. This makes MySQL reap the sleeping connections sooner.

comment guidelines for wiring an office
The signal testing is important. I worked at a place where we had some dodgy data-cabling because they were electricians, not data-cablers. For weeks after we moved in, they were coming back regularly to re-terminate or re-run cables.

comment What are your favorite open source tools?
Window Maker is much much lighter-weight than GNOME et al. This can be important in older hardware. It also doesn't have the "let's copy what Windows does" mentality.

comment Windows drive letters A: and B:
A lot of Microsoft software assume C: exists and is writable. Try installing Office to D:. It'll work, but it will still put a lot of files onto C:.

comment Biggest command-line mistake?
The "recover" command was sometimes useful on a floppy disk. But it couldn't cope with a hard disk. This was partly because its working space was a whole disk.
