Ok, according to wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_detection_and_correction) modern hard drives use CRC's to detect errors and try to recover using compact disc style error recovery. That's good enough for me.

Oh, no reason to delete, this is a good discussion. The problem I've got is the "seen" in "seen maybe one file". It requires going back and validating by hand every file, in order to notice that something is wrong. The backups will definitely help if you do have the multi level backup, and you've noticed a bad file. You can go back until you find one that's good. I'm just concerned about these increasingly enormous data stores we're building having hidden demons that show up right when it's time to ship a product. That's when everything feels like it goes wrong.

The problem is: how do you know you have a bad copy? And how do you know which copy that is backed up is the good one? In an automated way.

I don't see how child/parent/grandparent backups helps. There's no way to know with that system if a bit is flipped because a user intended to change it or if the drive did it on its own. Not without a checksum of some kind.

Here's an article on it: sun.com/bigadmin/content/submitted/data_rot.jsp

You know what? Sometimes people forget to do things. Maybe they had to run off in a hurry because their kid got in trouble with the principal at school. Maybe they are just scatterbrained. Language like "ripping off the company" is unnecessarily antagonistic and will just make people hate the IT department.

Thanks for the link. This is exactly what I was looking for. Works perfectly for my case (doesn't involve routing through the internet, so doesn't need security).

comment How can I get end-user Ghost running on servers?
Yes, that's the same clause I reviewed, and I interpreted it quite differently. They may have server backup products that they don't want it competing with but nowhere in the EULA does it even hint at it. If it's not spelled out, then it's not going to be binding. Instead, the license only talks about piracy and measures to prevent piracy, and we're happily paying customers. That all said, I do see and take your point about it being a gray hat question overall.

Yeah, I think you missed my point, if you're talking about shifting responsibilities and assigning blame, putting people at fault, etc. That inevitably leads to axe-swinging, us-vs-them, politics, resentment. I can sit in my chair all day long being totally right and not realize how much I'm hurting production. Senior people on my team can't even manage their email properly - if it's below the inbox fold then it never existed. How can I expect that a nice "what I'm doing and why" email will work 100%? And these are really smart people. So I have to find things that work.

Try not to pick apart the example I gave and consider the overall theme instead.
