I'd even settle for "something happened to this node". :-)

Even a simple notification would be fine, such as "this node was created" or "this node was updated". I can just query for the new node. Prefer server-side notification, but I don't think it exists. (At least not without something like Chef Guard.) Happy to hear about any reasonable option though, including client-side.

comment What are the benefits of running chef-server instead of chef-solo?
@LimboPeng You can store encrypted data bags in the Chef repo. You have to store the encryption key externally though.

Thanks--I'm unfamiliar with PermitRootLogin so I'll investigate that option. I agree with you that the risk is minimal, especially in comparison to what I am doing. And also, yeah, I am in fact using that includedir mechanism as well--instead of visudo-ing i am just editing that file, but I need to sudo (or else login as root as you suggest). Thanks for the good ideas.

I am in fact using Chef Solo to do this, but didn't necessarily want to complicate the question. There's a bootstrap phase where I do the visudo, and then I use a script to run the Chef Solo bootstrap (install Ruby, install Chef client).

Thanks. I noticed that there was a maven3 recipe available too, but as you note, the URL was wrong. So I updated it to one of the mirrors, set the checksum and it worked.
