comment Why buy high end hardware firewalls?
Or custom software to connect directly to the box.

comment Is there software that can help me easily back up my data from Amazon S3 to my premise?
@ErikA My point is that it is only as good as one copy since its all under Amazon S3. Even if they have "redundancy" its not an extra copy...

You're on the right track, multiple copies is the only way to be sure your data is safe.

comment Any ASP.NET host that uses EC2?
I doubt it, it is much more cost effective to buy your own servers and resell VMs on that hardware, than to rent from Amazon and then re-rent those VMs.

comment Server 2008 use net start/stop without administrator prompt
For a scheduled task, you can check the box "Run with highest privilages" additionally if you are running this from your machine, and you are a local admin on the machine, you can run sc \\server stop svcName

comment Data migration from one data center to another - SQL Server 2005 / 2008
The initial transfer will obviously be long, but if you can swing the live snyc from location to location, you may be able minimize your down time.

+1 - Amen! If you need fully redundant servers, its gonna cost $$$$. There's no two ways about it.

Maybe a link to one of the guides you've seen that is most clear on the topic? I've looked (not recently), but never found anything really great.

comment How to install Exchange 2010 so it is as independent as possible on our network
@Dominic, it is my personal recommendation that you either do as Greg suggests and do a hosted exchange server (possibly Google Apps is another alternative). Or follow the conventional Exchange 2010 Setup guidelines.

comment How to install Exchange 2010 so it is as independent as possible on our network
I suggest that you add every computer to the active directory. There are no good reasons not to add them. The centralized management should be reason enough, not to mention group policies, password management, etc. Is there any good reason this other sys admin is advocating keeping work stations OUT of the domain? To me that is a red flag that this admin doesn't understand what active directory is or what it does.

I would say super-slick administration is the means to achieve convenience and flexibility. Also, WHY on EARTH would you want ot have 0 Domain Controllers, and NO computers in the domain?
