comment Advantage of hardware firewalls over software firewalls?
@Scott: Let me put it a different way. If you have 2 NICs, a circuit board & a power supply - do you have a hardware firewall? The answer is no, because you need the software to control it. Firmware is irrelevant, and only indicates the use of an embedded system...

@wobble: You are correct that the name is a misnomer, but the term hardware firewall generally means a separate, standalone appliance whose sole job is firewall & related.

Because that is the market the ICSA certification was made for.

@Scott: You're welcome to your opinion, even if I've demonstrated with the resources you supplied that this opinion is incorrect.

Quoted from wikipedia: "No strict or well-defined boundaries separate firmware from software; both are quite loose descriptive terms."

ICSA certification is just a rubber stamp to make sure you buy vendor products before considering *nix/BSD. You won't find OpenBSD or *nix IPTables on the list, though many of the products are using that under the covers.

@Alex: I don't understand your question. You can name a network resource whatever you like, so long as it is unique. A common convention I've seen is to use astrological (earth, sun, moon, mars, etc) or greek mythology (zeus, hera, apollo, etc).

@Jim: A class A ip range is a tad large ;) DNS isn't a resource hog, and provides more value when configuration is centralized. Who knows what will happen to the network in the future...

Alex's previous question was about administering the hosts file to all involved hosts. 2+ hosts == time to use DNS. Who wants to sync every host when there's an established network resource & protocol for it's administration?!
