I am a software developer in Johannesburg, South Africa. I specialise in C# and ASP.NET, with SQL Server. I have, in some way or another, been involved in software development for about fourteen years, but always learning something new. At the moment that is WPF and MVVM. comment What do I need to configure to access a web app deployed on a remote server?
Yes! Of course! The URL I am using is for a directory under Default Web Site. The IP address shouldn't be needed, but some sort of DNS magic is required to make JCS point to the web server where bindings are set to domain names.

And then it magically adds it's own A and CNAME records?

comment How do I set up DNS for an intranet web site?
Yes, i should start with the real basics. So where do I create these CNAME and A recordsa? And what is webserver01.domain.local? obama.domain.local seems to make a little more sense.

comment How do I set up DNS on a LAN so web users don't need to use http://localhost…?
@MichaelHampton Not running a domain is my client's choice, not mine to question. I would if I were his IT provider, but I just write software for him.

comment How do I grant IIS APPPOOL\Orchard access to SQL Server 2012 Developer?
Thanks. I have become too dependent on using the GUI for DB admin and sometimes it really comes up short compare to T-SQL.

comment How do I set up an IP address on a Linux VM running in VM Player so I can access it from my Windows 7 host?
Maybe also worth mention is the only IP I can see on my local machine is the one for mobile broadband, in the 41. range. Should I add a new LAN IP then?

I get a hostname lookup error with 'address' in the command line you suggest.

comment Bugzilla CGI not working under Apache on Windows 7
Hehe, every time I run that script it says something different. When I posted my question though, it reported a DB error. Googling that error suggested I could clear the 'check_db' setting to proceed. The db is alive and well though, and the connection settings in localconfig are correct.

+1 for the port idea. I'll do that when I'm back to using both servers.

comment DB Tables missing in Script Wizard
This used to work, it's not access, and there are tables in my database - I'm trying to script them after all. I have never used TurboData before - I just wanted to try it. It didn't work so I uninstalled it with no change in Script Wizard.

comment Domain names for various local web sites
Aah, that's where it is (actually windows\system32\drivers\etc, but I haven't edited a hosts file for years, and couldn't find it, so I thought maybe things had changed. I'm just doing this for personal dev, so I'll leave DNS out of it for now.

comment Default DB is offline - I can't do anything
Luckily I managed to finally remember my 'sa' password and I could use that to change my windows user's default db. There is a more technical answer using the sqlcmd commandline app, which I will post later. Thanks though.

comment Add the current admin user to SQL Server Express 2008
Ouch, I just re-installed - it wasn't too painfull, RS seems to be operating properly, unlike before. I didn't think of Option 1, but sort of Option Two was doing something wrong. But thanks.
