comment Can I use WAMP as database server on my Laptop?
Yes, good catch. Either way, he might as well get himself in the habit of good Dev practices, even if the app is only for himself.

@Avalarion Do not let your clients connect directly to your database. Doing so goes against every application development best practice out there. You need at the feet least a simple web API in front of your database that can handle access control and logging.

comment improve server response time tried all things suggest here already
1) Set up a monitoring system 2) Collect hardware utilization performance metrics 3) Collect application profiling information (check out New Relic for this) 4) Analyze data to identify bottlenecks and areas to improve performance 5) Mitigate bottlenecks 6) Goto #3 <--- that is what you need to do. There's no magic bullet to "make things faster".

comment Two network connections - how do I control what traffic goes to/from each of them?
Wrong site, Skag. I've flagged this for migration over to Superuser.

"7x2TB drive RAID5 array" <--- you're asking for trouble there, sir.

comment Linux domain name and FQDN
You likely don't have either a FQDN or a domain name. Here's a hint: slow down. Stop flailing around. Take a week, devoted to reading about IP, DNS, SMTP, and other foundational Internet protocols. After doing so, you will be much more well-equipped to work though this issue on your own.

comment Linux domain name and FQDN
It is highly likely that your university blocks outbound SMTP except for that which you relay through their authenticated mail servers.

comment What type of SSL certificate I need to create CA?
@stimur It's technically possible, yes. Your trick is going to be trying to convince a publicly-trusted CA to grant you a signing certificate. Which they won't do.

comment What type of SSL certificate I need to create CA?
@Devon That's actually not correct. It is a trivial process to create a CA, and it's done very frequently for usage inside organizations.

comment I set up a web application server, and a separate server for postgres on the same network. How should I secure the connection?
To expand on @MichaelHampton's comment, if both servers are on the same network, and that network is trusted, there's no reason why you can't just connect directly. Now, if you are connecting across an un-trusted network, then it is very much worth putting some effort into securing your database traffic. In that case, look into IPsec, which is a much better long-term solution than SSH tunneling for this use case.

comment As a user with a home server, is it particularly bad or dangerous to open port 22 to my server?
BTW, this is a good question, but unfortunately it's off-topic here, as it's about a non-professional environment. I've flagged it for migration over to Superuser.

VPN is your solution. It is as secure and "elegant" as you're going to get.

comment May I become a sysadmin?
1) none of these questions can be answered. "How long is s piece of string?" 2) go out and show initiative. Find a small company that needs a lunch admin. You'll need to accept the fact that you'll be starting from the ground up.

You're ok port forwarding to your VMs, but are concerned about the security ramifications of standing up a VPN?!? I think you should think through things a bit more.

comment How to selectively enable or disable SSL for some URLs in Tomcat 7
Why? You're going to the trouble to enable SSL - why not just use it for everything?
