Is that basically a limitation of PVM and Xen forever, end of story, or could it in principle be got to work with the right kernel, an up-to-date-enough Xen host/guest or something?

comment How to sendmail via command line piping
@adamo: Because it was closer to the pattern in the original question to pipe into sendmail with '|' (and in fact the places I do this myself it's generally something like generate_test_message.sh | sendmail -t ).

Yes I noticed the pricing difference on the "heavy"; expecting it to be up 24/7 anyway. We're quite comfortable locking ourselves in to something for 3 years if the price is right.

Thanks, that's fantastic information. The plan to use spot instances originated with someone's experience of them 2-3 years ago (long uptimes at minimal pricing); seems it was too good to last. I hadn't considered reserved instances at all - in fact I'd somehow confused them with "dedicated instances" - but actually the three year pricing is really good (and competitive with the sort of VPS pricing you find on lowendbox.com , which was my "Plan B").
