Why do questions like this get downvoted? Am I doing something wrong?

I didn't setup any static files that I know of. I just had the network using DHCP but it kept trying to use 127.0.0.1 as the nameserver. Maybe that was cause I have named installed (but turned off atm...)?

@MichaelHampton I know. Sorry I'm not pro yet. For some reason our server was defaulting it's nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf to 127.0.0.1 no matter what I did. Installing this NetworkManager-gnome somehow magically fixed the problem.

@AWippler I was missing NetworkManager-gnome. Feel free to add that as an actual answer and I'll give you credit. Thanks!

comment VSFTPD does not allow upload with virtual users
Being that zac is a virtual user it's unlikely that the directory is owned by zac since it's not an actual user on the server.

Good point @Zoredache. I will look deeper into Monit to see how to handle this.

Great idea for pinging the firewall from an external source as opposed to pinging hosts from within the local network!

comment Script to log internet connectivity outage
Cool tool thanks! But I'm looking for something that is a bit more of a long term report, rather than a single snapshot of a moment in time. Like for example, I want to send the ISP a report showing what percentage of the current month our Internet connection was down.

By "outage" I mean that our connection to the Internet (for the whole network) is lost due to our ISP.

comment SSH login: automatically goto last directory visited?
screen is interesting. I noticed that if I run a long process in a remote SSH window, then close the session, reopen it and go screen -r, it goes right back to where I left off, as if the process was still running. Is this sort of like a NOHUP thing? I can execute a long process and then don't worry about leaving the terminal open?
