comment Will debian update packages that I've personally build from their official sources?
if you do apt-get clean and then retry the upgrade, do you get the same issue? Also, if you are on a version of apt-get <= 0.7.10 then you may be affected by this bug: bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=351056

comment Does SPDY improve delivery of assets served from a non-SPDY CDN?
the reason for using cookie-less domains for images is largely mitigated by the header compression and pipelining in SPDY

comment Identify the computer owning an IP address whose DNS record is 'borrowed' from an old computer
+1 for nmap. The line Running: Microsoft Windows XP is an accurate way to determine OS - nmap uses "fingerprinting" of the target network stack to determine the OS. BTW Cadmus Computer Systems were a hardware manufacturer who went out of business many years ago, VirtualBox VMs always use MAC addresses assigned to them.

comment How do I find the last start time for a Hyper-V virtual machine?
Knowing when it was last shut down is good enough for my purpose. Another way of finding both the last start and last shutdown would be to boot the VM and look at it's own event log / syslog (assuming the clock is accurate) but obviously that will take longer per machine and will use resources on the host.

comment Is there an issue with Exchange 2010 Active Sync and iOS 6.1.x?
FWIW, the iPhone users in my company have no problem with our Exchange 2010, and we did nothing special in our setup. I don't believe there's anything fundamentally wrong with the "iPhone <-> Exchange 2010" pairing.

+1 A manufacturer offering a specific part such as this should be able to provide better support in this situation - specifically, they must have encountered the problem with spindle settings for old BIOSes

comment 100% uptime for a web application
It doesn't have to be an insanely high figure. Just realistic. Draw them a graph of the costs of high availability, and the costs of downtime, and talk about the point where they meet. If downtime costs you $millions per hour then 5 nines is achievable, since you have $millions to spend on HA. If it costs $100/hour then two nines is probably all that you should consider.

comment How many computers can have the same public IP?
In some cases a single IP may be shared by users of multiple ISPs - for example if your site is on a national censorship list. It happened to wikipedia in the UK - wired.com/threatlevel/2008/12/wikipedia-block

I see what you're saying. Fortunately we don't need discovery for legal or compliance reasons, we're not regulated nor audited for anything related to email. I'll try posting in the postini forums.

Is it straightforward to set up a syslog server on the pfsense server? Again, my google skills seem to be failing me here.

Unfortunately pfSense does not use newsyslog, it uses clog. There are some complicated sounding methods to convert it, but I couldn't even work out where to start.
