Thanks for the response option #2 looks like its headed in the right direction for this particular situation with AWS. If I'm understanding this correctly though, wouldn't it be 'id:2:initdefault:' to get it out of single user mode and back to normal operation?

btw... Ubuntu is based on Debian which is a community driven Linux distro. The latest version is 14.04 (releases.ubuntu.com/14.04). Still looking for the location of the config file that controls the boot mode.

I don't have access to the bootloader, this is an AWS ec2 instance so I don't have direct console access.
