I run Farsight Software, a software consulting firm. Good people, team approach, reasonable rates. Give us a shout on info@farsightsoftware.com.

I'm a software engineer with a particular interest in web technologies (esp. JavaScript). I also do lots of work in C#, Java, and several other languages. I've been doing this professionally for 20 some-odd years, goofing with computers for 10 years before that, but I hope I'm not this guy.

On occasion, I write up snippets of nifty tricks or techniques in my anemic little blog.

This is brilliant for properly hiding .htaccess, etc., not to mention WEB-INF when fronting for a servlet container and keeping everything in the same source directory. Cheers!

Thanks! Very helpful! (I can't up-vote yet, and it seems rude to accept an answer too quickly, so I'll wait a bit.) Okay, I need an MTA. This server appears to have qmail pre-configured, so I may as well use that, only listening on 127.0.0.1, just to be tidy (I've already clamped port 25 down at the firewall level anyway). But I don't need (for instance) something called courier which is (according to netstat -lp) providing POP3 and IMAP. (BTW, I'm pretty sure I got "Attack surface" from Mick Bauer -- linuxjournal.com/xstatic/corporate/staff/Bauer)

Thanks for the tip. Signing up was incredibly painful and I've had one near-offensive support reply, but the support people do answer questions (usually without being offensive), pricing is fantastic, they offer full IPMI access to the server, and the transfer speed is excellent.

@womble: The physics is the least of it. Switching equipment, capacity of the lines, etc., etc. have so far dominated. No, I meant do you have any reference for (say) statistics related to trans-atlantic hops to back up your saying it isn't a "huge hop."

As I say, it's part of the overall mix. Looking around, I'm finding some very good hosting companies in the UK now, and for the first time in my experience they're also price- and feature-competitive. Rather than disregarding them out-of-hand, I thought I'd ask the question.
