comment Installing Windows Server on a compact flash card
The underlying issue is that I have this low-power (~20W) piece of hardware that would be perfect for a remote server running some basic administration tasks, but the power supply doesn't have any SATA power cables so the only straightforward way to boot it is from a CF card. All our important servers are running on a VMware cluster backed by a SAN; this is more of a tertiary backup, so I'm ok with something a little hack-y.

Thanks for the info. Do you think this is a "Really Doesn't Work" kind of thing or just "Not Officially Supported"? The CF drive shows up in the BIOS as an IDE device so I'm not even sure how Windows knows it's removable. It's not like this is a USB drive someone is going to pull out in the middle of operation.

Out of curiosity, what was the vendor of the problematic service? What kinds of things was it doing?

comment Multiple electrical supplies in a server room
The building is a small commercial office building, not a datacenter. By "service" I mean a metered electric utility connection. We have 2 sets of wires coming into the building from the grid

comment NAS Migration: Preserve “Previous Versions” shadow copies
It sounds like we really should work with EMC to solve this, which is fine. But I still feel like if the NAS is serving these copies in a way that Windows can understand, there must be a 3rd party tool that can read & write them as well??

comment Laptop using DHCP lease from another network
No, the DHCP-assigned address it's using is on a random subnet -- not one of ours, and the IP address does not appear in our DHCP lease table. The gateway IP address is also not ours. The laptop seems to be continuing to use a DHCP lease from a completely unrelated network.

OK you are clearly a better searcher than I am, thanks. Also, you're right about the cost of the electrician... nothing is free.

The legal ramifications argument is interesting, and not something I had really thought about.

comment Using admin credentials to log on as a user vs. storing passwords
The IT admins like to log in as a user to configure software, check settings, etc. This can't always be done from the admin account. Some programs store settings per-user, and so they must be configured by that user.

How is this off-topic? "Questions on Server Fault are expected to generally relate to system administration, servers, or professional desktop IT" ... seems like it hits all three of those.

comment Upload website to Windows Server 2008 (on Amazon EC2)
@Richard: I will definitely look into it. Seems useful. Just trying to get a sense of what the possibilities are. I currently do desktop development in .NET and adore the "ClickOnce Deployment" feature, so I guess I was looking for something that simple. But WebDAV is clearly better than FTP, which I was trying to avoid.

@pablo: I'm not thrilled about FTP since it isn't secure, but I suppose I would settle if that were the only option. But this is 2011, there must be a better way to deploy files to a web server!

comment CNAME to S3 not working
I read this briefly before creating the CNAME, but didn't notice the requirement that the S3 bucket must have the same name as the CNAME. Thanks for pointing me there.

What do you mean "configure host headers to account for both URLs"?

comment need help upgrading small business wifi network
@Cry Havok: I guess one of the things I wasn't sure of was whether all the APs should have the same channel or different channels...?

comment need help upgrading small business wifi network
About roaming: we had tried to just set them all to the same SSID/subnet, with different (non-overlaping) channels, but had problems with that because computers would connect to the APs seemingly at random, and often would not pick the best AP. Sometimes the AP/channel that computers picked provided essentially no connectivity. Is there something to be done about that?
