not sure why this is marked off topic. any professional system administrator should be committing config files, documentation, scripts, etc. to a repository to keep track of changes.

thanks, but no, that's not it. i had to type it in manually because these servers are on an isolated network. i just copied and pasted the same line with a typo over and over

That is not what the documentation is saying. As listed in the table, the /255.255.255.0 is a netmask. If there is a way to list multiple wildcards in the host definition, that isn't the way to do it.

@tristan setuid is specifically designed for situations like his and it does not require you to execute the command as root. in fact, it's made so you don't run as root. however, setuid only works on shebang executables in a few *nix systems so it may or may not work for him
