comment HAProxy reload - old processes never terminated
ShaneMadden, all processes are owning listeners, but only the last process really listen to TCP (based on netstat). The process 12488 does not exist anymore, it was somehow terminated. wurtel, strace shows repetition of : gettimeofday({1417009573, 706535}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1417009573, 706629}, NULL) = 0 epoll_wait(0, {}, 200, 1000)

No matter what I change, default state, or instance boot order, the instance 2 always get picked up. I'm starting to think the IP address / fingerprint has something to do with the election.

comment How to substitute a string from an awk result?
Thanks, now my issue is that there's multiple occurrence of "title2" also. I would need to substitute only on the line, found between "title2" and "replaceme". I used solution based on 1h;1!H : stackoverflow.com/questions/8164604/…

If I understand correctly, since a TCP connection is defined by srcIP:srcPORT/destIP:destPORT, if I am able to listen in the back-end servers on multiple ports, that would mean between HAProxy and back-end servers I would be able to have multiple connection from the same 127.0.0.1:12345 -> 10.0.0.1:8081, 127.0.0.1:12345 -> 10.0.0.1:8082, etc ? Does this really works ?

I'm not quite sure this would work inside an AWS VPC infrastructure as I need to use Elastic IP associated to each instance. Your solution would be very close to the DNS one, since Amazon Route53 offers the option to add a health check. My concern is that even with a low TTL, we cannot afford to wait the propagation to other countries (we have client worldwide) to stop sending traffic to a "dead" HA instance.
