comment How to route traffic from private network to openvpn subnet (and back)
@JakovSosic I added the routes to the question per your request. Note that I don't see the icmp packets coming in on internal's nic. Although, I could be using tcpdump incorrectly. I'll see about trying from a different server.

comment Getting regular PHP updates in Ubuntu Lucid
@spankmaster79: I used www.dotdeb.org for a while, but then the last time I tried updating, ran into problems because it seemed Lucid wasn't supported anymore. Can't seem to find the documentation on that change right now, but I vaguely remember reading about it somewhere.

I want to stick with the LTS release so that I only have to worry about migrating customers to another server ever four years or so. However, letting production services like PHP, MySQL, Postgres, etc. lag behind that long just isn't acceptable in my opinion.

comment Anyone seen a helper program to create a changelog for a server?
For clarification, I am already tracking changes to files. I am only looking for info on a changelog "helper" program or script at this point.

I already have the infrastructure to track changes to config files. I am looking for a program or script solely for the purpose of facilitating the changelog.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I would prefer for this script to use the user's default editor (just like hg/svn commit) and I wouldn't want the user to have to specify the file.

comment How to keep a pylons web-application server running on windows server 2003
Well, I have never had applications crash, that I am aware of. I have had exceptions, but I trap my exceptions at a high level so they don't make it through to IIS. However, I did have application pools designed to shut-down the application to conserve resources if the application hadn't been used in 20 minutes (this is the default behavior). IIS knows that if a request comes in and there is no application in the application pool, that it needs to start the application. I assume this would work the same if the application crashed.

comment Best tool for monitoring backups, etc. and trending statstics from that data
Thanks for the comment, I think I had ruled out opsview for some reason, but based on your recommendation, I may end up trying it before I jump into nagios proper.

comment What are the pit-falls of using Windows 7 as a web server?
Maybe not exactly, but it points you in the right direction. If the technical limitation in IIS 5.1 (Windows XP) and IIS 7 (Vista) was connection limits, its likely that the IIS 7.5 has similar issues, and would be something specific for you to research.

comment Looking for software to monitor scheduled emails and notify when they don't arrive or contain errors
I have realized I need to invest in a real monitoring system like nagios or zabbix and then just write a plugin to test the status of the job. Email is easy, but once the monitoring infrastructure is in place, monitoring is pretty easy too.

Do you think it would be better to "push" stats to nagios over HTTP or let it pull stats from log files?

Thanks for the answer. I already have a framework that handles running backups (and other tasks), which collects statistics, so backupninja would be overkill. Nagios seems to be a consensus and then munin or cacti to trend.

Just for clarification, I wouldn't be writing my own monitoring tool. The question is to get recommendation for monitoring/trending tools that will integrate with the backup/script-running framework I have built.

In some instances, your advice is helpful. However, its common to have jobs that we want to make sure run on scheduled tasks and often the easiest way to know they have run is to send an email (backup jobs for instance). While some other kind of monitoring system could be implemented in many cases, the complexity of doing so is often not warranted. Sending an email is easy and if we had a system to monitor those emails, it would be a much less complicated than trying to monitor lots of different processes accross diverse platforms and applications.
