Actually, with the micro type instance, which only supports EBS volumes for storage, you do save money because you must pay per gb of reserved space. With, say, the standard 15gb ubuntu AMI, that can add up.

Also, this does not happen when doing the rsync or copy locally.

Apparently, this is not strictly an rsync issue. Attempting to copy the directories over samba also results in the same problem.
