Semi retired old time computer nerd who started programming on a Commodore Pet.

Since I'm also active in the Physics forum I should add that I started as a theoretical chemist, moved into solid state photochemistry and finally worked in industry as a colloid scientist. I only became a full time computer nerd in 1997.

Ah, of course, thanks :-) The MAC address is bound to be in the switch arp cache.

Thanks Pekka. Sadly the NAS names could be anything.

Can you not access all the networks from your workstation - yes, if I want to manually scan several hundred branch offices :-) I'm after something I can run overnight as part of our monitoring process and then survy the results in the morning.

Thanks Lawrence. Sadly it looks as if that requires Java and there's no guarantee all servers have Java. Also it's not clear from the web site whether I can run Angry IP scanner from a command line to get output piped to a file. It appears to be a GUI app.

I've set myself an Outlook reminder :-) It appears SE doesn't allow me to award the bonus until 24 hours after I created it, so I'll have to do it tomorrow.

Hi Mike, I had already seen that article and gone through the steps it described. Anyhow, I thought I'd have one more go, and it worked! I don't know what I did wrong the first time, but anyhow the bounty is yours (in 22 hours when SE allows me to grant it :-)
