comment Sharing/Security File/Folder Permissions
Hmmm, i tried it on my PC before posting, so I can confirm it does work. Is it possible the setup.exe is opening some other file, or possibly opening itself for read access. In fact if it's an encrypted exe it probably is opening itself for read access so it can decrypt itself. In that case you will have to allow read access for it to work.

comment Setting up an http proxy to use a web interface?
If you use unix then I'm fairly certain Apache can do this, possibly with the module to do URL rewriting. It's basically the same approach as I described.

comment Network Service account accessing a folder share
@pip: But you can create a local resource with the same username and password on the remote machine, then grant that account the required access. The end result is the same.

comment Suggestions for a productive hardware setup with excellent virus protection
@Chris: I would (indeed I do) run a full scan occasionally e.g. over a lunch break. Whether you could trust developers (a race related to Orcs but less evolved :-) to do the same is debatable.
