Semi retired old time computer nerd who started programming on a Commodore Pet.

Since I'm also active in the Physics forum I should add that I started as a theoretical chemist, moved into solid state photochemistry and finally worked in industry as a colloid scientist. I only became a full time computer nerd in 1997.

comment How to revoke change password permission only for users in specific OU?
Strictly speaking that doesn't stop users changing their password, it just removes the option from the ctrl-alt-del dialog. I can't find any group policy setting that does the same as ticking the "User cannot change password" box in the user properties.

comment How many hours of use before I need to clean a tape drive?
Cleaning an LTO-3 drive once a month won't do any harm (apart of course from costing you money as it uses up the cleaning tape) but it shouldn't be necessary.

comment Why can't I drag/drop a file for editing in notepad in Windows Server 2008?
I certainly agree that the drag-drop problem seems odd. If I get time today I'll try it on our terminal server. Given that the elevated apps are sharing the same window station you ought to be able to drag drop between elevated and non-elevated.

comment Virtualization of Servers / Raid Configuration for a small business
MS officially don't support running Hyper-V on SBS 2008, and indeed there are some minor wrinkles. However Hyper-V does work on SBS, and in fact works very well. Modern servers are so powerful that arguably just running SBS is a waste of resources.

Have you got user access control turned on? If so that my be interfering. When UAC is on members of the local Administrators group (apart from Administrator itself) don't get full Administrator rights.

comment Why can't the IIS installer can't copy staxmem.dll despite it being in the folder specified?
So much for that idea :-( I wonder if the Web Platform Installer wants an old version of staxmem.dll.

comment SQL Server Instancing: Should I use multiple instances or databases?
Exactly. With 8GB you could have 4 instances and each could use up to 2GB at the same time. However any one instance could only use a maximum of 2GB, or 3GB with the boot.ini /3GB switch.
