Semi retired old time computer nerd who started programming on a Commodore Pet.

Since I'm also active in the Physics forum I should add that I started as a theoretical chemist, moved into solid state photochemistry and finally worked in industry as a colloid scientist. I only became a full time computer nerd in 1997.

comment Can't read an LTO-3 tape on a different LTO-3 drive
Cleaned the drive (obviously :-). None of the tapes written on the Tandberg work in the IBM, and some of the tapes are newer than others so I don't think the problem is the tapes. No SCSI errors are being generated when we try and read the tapes in the IBM. Now I've had a chance to stop panicing, it has to be the IBM drive, doesn't it?

comment BIND for Windows domain in DR site
@Sergei: it doesn't matter what you call the domain. I always use something.site so I know at a glance it's a domain I've created for this purpose i.e. a site specific domain. The name need not be related to your AD domain or indeed anything else.

@Evan: I know you're really just an usually advanced AI program running on a Mac, but you're secret's safe with me :-) I've edited my comment and hopefully clarified it a bit.

comment How do I grant users the ability to install windows services?
Using "pre-created" services is all I could come up with. I have to say it seems a slightly odd question. If developers need to create services this sounds like a development environment. Would you let developers loose on your live servers? I think the best answer might be to give the developers their own server!

comment Reliability and Performance Monitor Data Collector Set : Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password
Data collector sets don't necessarily run as the user who is running Perfmon. That's because they have to run even when the PC is logged out. That's why there's an option to set the account in the set properties. Try setting the set properties to use the administrator account.

comment How do I get around restrictive email policies by ISP?
Well I upvoted it again. Why would you downvote someone for giving the best answer to the question? We often recommend to people they take out an account with someone that does authenticated SMTP and allows mass mailings. Then you route your mailshots through them and use authentication.

comment IIS HTTPS Windows Performance Counters
Servicing SSL requests is computationally much more expensive than servicing HTTP requests because the server has to do the encryption and decryption. So if SSL processing is the bottleneck you'd expect to see high CPU. If bandwidth is the bottleneck then you'd expect to see a big queue of SSL (and HTTP) connections and low CPU.

comment Sharing a drive on a hosted Win2003 Server
SMB is very slow over a WAN link, whether it's a conventional VPN or a TS redirected drive. There isn't a lot that can be done about that.

comment Best practices for Windows Server 2003 live server reboot
@Alex: I use Windows 2008 and Hyper-V and it works brilliantly well (I'm sure VMWare would be just as good). There are no caveats beyond the obvious e.g. you need a Windows licence for every VM beyond the first and this can get expensive. I wouldn't virtualise a big SQL Server (for light use SQL Server works fine on Hyper-V) but web servers virtualise vey well.

comment Can't connect to SQL Server using 'sa' account, what I'm missing?
If you have the Management Studio on another PC, even if it's at the far end of a VPN, you should still be able to connect. The point is to check whether there's something screwy with the server setup, or whether the problem lies with the osql command.

comment Why hasn't rsync caught on in the Windows world?
I rarely mark replies down, and I'm not going to mark this one down, but since when has ServerFault been a forum for average Windows users? For the sysadmin, offsite replication is becoming increasingly important. Big companies will probably just buy DPM to use over their T3 connections. We humbler types need something that will work at ADSL upload speed, and rsync does this very well.

comment Cheap gigabit switch?
Why was this closed? It seems a sensible question. Anyhow I recommend the Belkin entry level switches. After all Dell rebadge them and sell them as PowerConnects! I have several and if you just want a simple unmanaged switch they are perfect.

comment User profile paths in RemoteApp sessions
Evan is a bit more forthright than me, but I basically agree with his post. I think you need to establish the starting point that users work ON THE TS SERVER. If they want to "export" a file to their laptop then they need to use a different mechanism. That could be a script or whatever to transfer a file to their laptop through a mapped drive, TS local drive or whatever. I honestly can't think of a reliable way to do what you're attempting. Sorry :-(

comment Install Error: Could not access VBScript run time for custom action
If UAC is on then just being a member of the local administrators group does not give you the same privileges as the local administrator account. Strange but true. Try logging on as the local administrator instead of some domain account that happens to be in the local administrators group.

comment Why doesn't this script to list group members work?
Aargh, I just knew someone would say that! I'm putting it in a .ps1 file and running the file. I have tried copying and pasting the code into Powershell, and as you say I get the >> prompt but when I hit enter again there's no output i.e. just the same as running the .ps1 file. What on earth can be making it fail?

comment MSDE database disappeared after receiving a connection error during a query
Do you have a full version of SQL Server to hand that you could use to shrink the database? There are eval versions of SQL Server you can use, after all you only need it once!
