comment Moving Server to new Hardware - SBS 2008
No. Both system-state backup and full volume backup (ala Ghost) will include parts of the registry that are dependent on the computer hardware, and should only be restored to identical hardware.

comment How to setup linux permissions for the WWW folder?
I don't like the idea of having all web files writable by PHP, it increases your possible exposure if there is a script vulnerability.

comment Updating Malware cleaning skills
I consider myself fairly proficient with procexp and autoruns. Last time I used these tools to remove a virus everything looked squeaky clean, but it turned out that the computer was still transmitting spam messages - enough to get our IP put on several SMTP blacklists. The only way to be sure of a clean box is to rebuild.

PHP runs in the same user context as the webserver, so it can create files and folders in any directory owned by the webserver. There are generally only a few folders like this (/uploads/ for example). I'm not sure about git/svn - could you add them to the group account that controls the website?

Yes, USMT will work great if you want to clone an existing profile. But I don't think it can be used to set up a new clean profile.

comment Recommendations for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V VPS Host?
I'm a huge fan of Rackspace Cloud for Windows, but you probably won't be able to use Hyper-V on their instances because it's already virtual. Why do you need a Hyper-V host?

I would recommend NOT virtualizing your domain controller. You could easily encounter logon or dns issues on the host after a cold boot, and you'll probably have timekeeping issues on the domain controller running as a guest OS. Every Active Directory domain should have at least one physical domain controller.

I think Vi's point is that some data won't be sent until a connection is established. Take for example an HTTP request - if you have port 80 blocked, you will never be able to see what it's requesting because the request isn't made until the connection is opened.

comment Which free RDBMS is best for small in-house development?
On a different project I'm currently using IIS+PHP to get Integrated Authentication (IE-only). It was a pain to set up, even getting it's own page in the documentation wiki.

We'll be WELL under the 4GB limit. Only a few hundred MB, at most.

Totally dead. In my case, both the power supply and motherboard failed.
