Hmm, any idea why you have to install this manually on Windows? On Linux there's always a loopback adapter by default.

Yes, indeed, I had confused SSH and SSL! My OpenSSH daemon was in fact using a .pub file on my server, at /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub and was not using any of the SSL certificate authority architecture. When I ran ssh-keygen -l on that file, it gave me the server's RSA2 key fingerprint.

Very useful answer, but I don't think you've covered the .pub format created by ssh-keygen. It would be useful to know how that ties in with the rest.
