@FranciscoLuz the command in my answer is specific to a DSA key. If you have an RSA key, then your command is correct. I added a blurb to the answer to address this.

I don't think this is the root cause. The current date format, with a dash, works just fine for other log files. The difference between those log files and /var/log/messages is that the rotated /var/log/messages files are not compressed.

Done, details added to the question above. I'm curious whether there's some contention issue with the live /var/log/messages file and the delaycompress option will help.
