comment logrotate does not compress /var/log/messages
I don't think this is the root cause. The current date format, with a dash, works just fine for other log files. The difference between those log files and /var/log/messages is that the rotated /var/log/messages files are not compressed.

Done, details added to the question above. I'm curious whether there's some contention issue with the live /var/log/messages file and the delaycompress option will help.

comment logrotate does not compress /var/log/messages
I tried running logrotate manually like you suggested, and it tells me it's compressing the logs, but I don't find any compressed logs anywhere. See my question above for details.

Thanks for the reply. I'm running Gentoo Linux. My crontabs are not doing any management of /var/log/messages. Please see the new info in my question for details.

Right, I took a closer look at your question and indeed got A and B switched around. That's easy enough to fix :)

comment Set account to root in Ubuntu
Thanks for the clarification. I thought maybe the Ubuntu /etc/sudoers might have similar commented-out config options.

comment Install coverage-3.0.1 to gentoo
That's true, but I find many Python packages which are useful but don't have an ebuild maintainer. That's why I end up using a mixture of both portage and setuptools for Python packages. I haven't shot myself in the foot yet! :P

comment How do I change my private key passphrase?
This is from the man page shipping with net-misc/openssh-5.2_p1-r2 on Gentoo Linux.

comment Why is my system constantly downloading from 255.255.255.255:bootps?
Thanks for clarifying. But because this seems to be going on for an extended period of time at the high throughput rates probably means there's another host on the LAN that's misbehaving, flooding the LAN with DHCP requests?

comment How do I share a Git repository with multiple users on a machine?
I like Gitosis. It's a pretty effective way to control access based on public keys.

comment Unix Cron : Can we set cron jobs to run at the same time
You can also check whether the cron job runs successfully by setting it to execute "in 5 minutes" and observing your machine for evidence of success.
