The server makes the router external IP address flap up and down. As soon as I unplug the server, the router settles back down.

No.. It's set to 192.168.1.1 - the router is 192.168.1.254

Also, with the proxying, I'm pretty sure google won't know that the website is hosted in the UK because it'll be hidden behind the local (US) server.

Thanks for the reply..Finding the location of the user requires they're already connected to a server. What I'm trying to do is tell them which server to connect to. I'm guessing this will have to be done with some sort of load balancer if it can't be done with DNS.

Thanks for the reply..It took approx 15 minutes before requests went to the other server. Does that sound right to you? Our TTL is 5 minutes.

We used to have external DNS, however we found it easier to manage our own (at least initially), once we installed our BIGIP load balancers, as we had to create a subdomain used for load balacing purposes only.

I've been given some more information about what happened.We have two nameservers NS1 and NS2. External clients were unable to retrieve records from our nameservers for a full 15 minutes before NS2 started responding to DNS requests.
