Great thanks for the suggestion, I'll look in to that :-)

comment What other ways can I load balance EC2 servers without using Elastic Load Balancing?
yes but I will need to add the IP address to my firewall settings, so how would I do that when the instances are started by autoscale.

As a follow up - do you know if it is possible to automtically assign an IP address to an instance when it is started by an autoscale policy?

yep you are right, simples when you think about it. this will mean reserving a number of IPs and adding to firewall and just paying for the IPs when they are not needed. thanks.

comment Help - since adding an elastic load balancer to my EC2 web application I cannot connect with the MySQL database (not in AWS)
However I still had the same problem when adding the DNS name to the firewall settings. It appears that the way the firewall works is to look up the IP address of the DNS and store that in its settings. AWS elastic load balancers change their IP addresses over time so this is not a very good solution - might have to open up 3306 to the world ... !! or find another way to load balance across multiple EC2 instances and connect to remote MySQL server - though I would have to add each new IP to the firewall ... hmm

Thanks - it was the firewall rules they were set to allow only remote access from a single (elastic) IP address. best

comment Help - since adding an elastic load balancer to my EC2 web application I cannot connect with the MySQL database (not in AWS)
Hi thanks for your answer. In the privileges table in mysql I have set the host field for the user that my EC2 instance scripts use to % which I think means should allow any IP address to connect. Since ELB does not use an IP address I cannot add an IP address as a host. Should % not allow it to connect anyway? I will look at firewall rules.

Yes that's right the EC2 instances are behind the load balancer, I have hardcoded the database connection details in a separate PHP script on the EC2 instances.

comment What does glibc detected …httpd: double free or corruption mean?
Well I rebuilt the server and this seems to have solved my problem, the server no longer crashes and all 130 photos uploaded ok. I still have the old configuration as a machine image on Amazon so can always start it up again and investigate further in the future, unfortunately I am pushed for time to get a working system developed.

Thanks Gilles - actually I can reproduce this. It happens every time I repeat the same task without fail. The task that caused the problem was uploading a large-ish number of photos. I select 130 images and by the time the server has processed about 40 (140MB worth) it crashes and I see this error in the error log. This machine is an Amazon Cent-OS image and I have noticed that there is a later version so I am considering rebuilding it to see if the problem still exists. I am using amazon cloudwatch monitoring tools to check performance, should this be sufficient re memory test?

comment How should I copy the “mysql” database to my new server using PHPMyAdmin
Thanks, so should I manually create the users and set permissions once I have imported the databases? The way I did it was to export each database individually as SQL and then create a new database on new server and import from file.
