comment Open Source webapp that shows PC / Projector status in 30+ Lecture rooms
The status is going to come from the Lecturers and the AV guy who cleans the filters and changes the bulbs. It is not monitoring I am looking for, it is so that a lecturer can glance at a page in the morning to see if all the lecture PCs and projectors are green or else try to change rooms. I.e. if a projector is in for repair for two days, that would be red with an ETA of April 29th for repair.

comment Why would the SQL 2008 “Generate scripts…” utility generate an invalid SQL script?
If after trying the script without the data (and if it doesn't work), you might try removing sections of the script and try to run that. I.e. just try run the script that generates the tables only, remove the SQL pertaining to Foreign Keys etc. If you are lucky it may just be a column type or something.

comment Setting permissions on user accounts
On a note about trust: We had summer students in here installing software on PCs and we made them normal "Domain Users" but put the "Interns" group into "Local Admins" of each desktop PC using a script. So they could mess with normal PCs but couldn't log into Servers or use AD.

Try adding 127.0.0.1 crazyname to a new line in the host file and then ping crazyname. The replies should be from 127.0.0.1.

If you are browsing to www.acme.com, that also needs to be in hosts file. If you go to the command line and **ping acme.com" the reply should be 192.168.0.4. If not, your PC is not checking the host file or the host is not formatted correctly.

comment Using Subversion with SQL Server Management Studio
From my reading on the topic, the Plugin source control options in SQL Manager are limited. At a stretch, if you are stuck you can generate a script for the database at every major build and use Visual Studio to commit the script at the same time as the rest of your code.
