Thanks for the information, very interesting. Since not everyone can read the book (and since answers should stand on their own): Could you explain a bit more how TCP slow start, radio controllers and configuration contribute to latency?

Interesting point. However, this explains only part of the problem. GPRS typically has latencies of 500-1,000ms. Latency across a continent, is typically not more than 200-300ms, so even very wasteful routing should not give you 1,000 ms.

@Dorus: Your comment does not make sense. PPP nodes can have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, precisely becauses IP builds on the underlying protocols, such as Ethernet or PPP. However, PPP nodes do not have a MAC address (because the PPP standard does not have them).
