comment How to add AD users to a “Domain Controller” running ADLDS?
Any reasons for the down-votes? Other than "I'm an IT guy and I don't like it when developers go against my advice?"

@MDMarra - Something analogous is definitely what I look for in a test system. If something lighter-weight is available and it behaves the same (or at least adheres to some code contract), then I'll choose that any day. What we're talking about, here, is "where in the development process do you place the bottleneck." I've seen it both ways. The slow down during coding is HUGE if the test environment is bulky, slow, or requires me to pass through too many layers to get to it. When I'm able to code against something small in my local box, I have much more time to tackle deployment issues later.

@JohnGardeniers - I don't think developers wonder that very often. I think they expect it to behave differently and hope that there aren't too many "real world" glitches. I don't know too many developers who are stupid enough to think it's all the same. I have, on the other hand, found lots of mis-managed "real world" environments that make deployment and implementation a lot harder than it should be. Finding ways to develop against fake/mock systems is a very good development practice. Good production environment management helps A LOT when it's time for the software to meet the "real world".

@MDMarra - Having lighter-weight systems to test against in a development environment is pretty important to developing software. Instead of getting slowed down by bulky servers and systems built for production, I can develop quickly and wrestle with implementation issues later on. That's why I'm "trying hard".

I'm writing an app that's supposed to authenticate against Active Directory. I am trying hard to avoid installing Windows Server on a VM so that I can hit a real domain controller.
