comment screen -R not working with ssh
Have you checked the permissions on the sockets in /var/run/screen? What happens if you use 'screen -D -RR' instead?

comment rsyslog: facilities not separating
You should try some rsyslog debugging first, hopefully that will show how your messages are being processed.

comment Intermittent mysql database connection lost
Depending on what unix you are on, the file might be /var/log/syslog. sar is a front end to a performance tool that might be available on your system. Run sar -A, is there any output?

comment rsync on OS X changes folder's group name to _lpoperator
OH yeah, good point. A lot of OSX config is not in the traditional unix files.

Does your app have the ability to reconnect to the database automatically? Anything interesting in /var/log/messages? Are you gathering sar data to review?

comment Quickest way to replicate small files on 4 machines?
Yeah I really agree with this answer. The sensible thing seems to be to dump all the files in a central location.

Try booting in to init state 3 but with rhgb and quiet removed from the grub boot line. That might display more useful info during the boot. Also, when you boot in to init state 3, is the system up on the network? Can you ssh in to it?

comment Running inotifywait on startup of machine
When you run the script manually, are you running it as yourself or as root? Everything in rc.local runs as root. Also, can you collect some debugging info? inotifywait outputs info on stdout and stderr. You should capture those to files when the system boots and see if there is anything interesting there.

What happens if you boot to init state 3? You should get a text console you can log in to. Check the output of dmesg after you log in to see if anything interesting is happening during the boot.

Yes I find greylisting to be very helpful. Spammers just want to blast out their messages and don't want to queue messages to try 10 minutes later.

comment subdomains: will the external host urls still work
Jenny adds a great point. That's exactly why I used example.com and example.org in my answer.
